Artist's Description

In the Spring of 2000 I had an accident in the Frank Church, River of No Return Wilderness that left me with a broken back, neck, arm, ankle and facial fractures. "Polite Butterflies" was done as I was on my first outing since the accident. My son wandered around the area as I painted. He came to report that there were "no polite butterflies" I asked if that meant that they would not let him catch them. He responded with a disappointed, "yes". The figure is him walking the road in search of a "polite butterfly" amid the hundreds that were drinking from the puddles in the roadway.

Steve Spencer, an Idaho native, is a self-taught wildlife, landscape and portrait artist. His paintings are the fruit of rigorous contact with the source, the hours he spends in front of an easel are preceded by weeks in the mountains and canyons of the west.
