Back in the late 70's, I was hunting elk with some friends in the Upper Selway River drainage west of Darby, Montana. When I came upon Canyon Lake, Elk hunting had to wait as I photographed the lake in the mid-day haze caused by a nearby forest fire on Vance Mountain.

I returned to this exact location in 2008 and found that the four trees on the left half of the painting were standing skeletons, and young trees were beginning their upright duty of "watchmen" of the lake: still as pristine as that day in September of 1979.

Steve Spencer, an Idaho native, is a self-taught wildlife, landscape and portrait artist. His paintings are the fruit of rigorous contact with the source, the hours he spends in front of an easel are preceded by weeks in the mountains and canyons of the west. The landscapes are places he has walked and is familiar with. Steve's work is an articulate expression of his love for the "delicate weave of extremes" that is the West.
